A trip to Santa's Village

7/17/2019

Santa’s Village is 60 acres of family fun. It is in Bracebridge by the Muskoka River in Ontario Canada.
It is an amusement park and great for smaller kids. I would say up to the age about 12 years. The line-ups are short. The rides are not big in size, so smaller kids will go in it (parents can go with them if needed). The ride itself is not too long, what is good again for smaller kids. You pay the entree to get in Santa’s village than almost all the rides are for free and you can let them go in as many times as they want. A few things you have to pay for. What my grandkids picked, was the zip-line. We were not too sure if they could do it as it was high (no worries they are tied up very good), but they insisted to go on it…and they LOVED it. We were very proud they did this zip-line. There is a picture of it in my blog. I just show a few of the rides, but there are many more and lots of things to do. Santa is driving around and talk to big and small. You can have your picture taken with Santa in Santa’s cottage. We had lunch there what was very good!  There is a scavenger hunt. If they get to find all the characters, they will get a certificate at the end.
I would say. You have smaller kids, go to Santa’s Village. They will love it!

My home country the Netherlands.

6/19/2019

Born in the Netherlands many moons ago.  It is still nice to go back for a visit and ride a bike, eat the Dutch treats (I also will put up a blog about the Dutch food you should eat when you visit the Netherlands), and go visit the towns you lived in see family and old friends. I thought I make a blog to let you know a little what my home country is like.
The Netherlands is often called Holland. But Holland is not the correct name. Holland are 2 provinces. “Noord Holland and Zuid-Holland “in the Netherlands. However, the name Holland is often used when all of the Netherlands is meant.
The Netherlands is well known for bikes, windmills, cheese, canals, tulips, wooden shoes, trains, freight ships and Dutch masters.

My husband and me on a visit and felt like we were tourists.
Picture
Windmills. The most important of a windmill was probably the pumping water out of the lowlands. About one third of the Netherlands lies below sea level. There are still some being used for drainage this is in Kinderdijk. The picture I put with the blog is a windmill in Kinderdijk.
Picture
Picture
Wooden shoes. No, they do not wear them in everyday life at this moment. They used to wear them as they were affordable, water resistant and worn with goat hair socks they kept your feet warm.  The picture me sitting in the big wooden shoe is in Amsterdam. Tourists will sit in this and take a picture. I guess I  am a tourist  in my home country. lol
Picture
Bikes. I think as soon as a child can walk they can ride a bike.  Bike lanes are everywhere.  As the country is small it is often faster to go on the bike as with the car.
Picture
Trains. There  is a dense railway network which connects nearly all towns and cities. It primarily supports passenger transport. It is very easy to use and the trains go often. So you never need to wait long when you miss one

Canals and rivers. There are lots of canals and rivers in the Netherlands. Transporting good is often done by a freight ship. We were lucky to go on one for a day and see how life is on a freight ship. It is used for pleasure boats  also. And with that we were lucky too, to go on a pleasure boat for a few times.
Picture
Cheese. The Netherlands is the world’s largest exporter of cheese. The Dutch eat a lot of cheese. And there are a lot of different kind of cheeses.
Picture
Tulips. Originally from Turkey and they  were imported in the sixteenth century in the Netherlands and became very popular flower in the Netherlands.

Food out the wall. You put money in, open one of the windows and pull out your pick warm or cold snack
.
Picture
Dutch Masters. One of perhaps the greatest and most famous portrait painter was Rembrandt van Rijn. The picture in my blog is the statue on Rembrandt plein (Rembrandt square) in central Amsterdam.

A few pictures of the trip out west.

In 2017 we took a trip out west. It was in Sept. and Oct. It is a  great time of the year, as there were fall colors. We have seen temperatures from in the 20 ties to well below zero.  We drove through the States out west and came back through Canada. It was an amazing trip. We of course stopped in Banff. On top of seeing the beautiful lakes  with strong colors we took a helicopter tour taken from Canmore over the Rocky’s.  Pictures will not give the amazing view you have when you fly over. Sometimes he flew so close it felt like you could “touch” the top of the rocks.  Yes, it is me in the picture in the helicopter. Taken by my husband.

Grundy Lake Provincial Park.

8/1/2018

As many know I love nature. For many years we have been in Grundy Lake Provincial Park camping. My husband even went when he was very young. This Park is located near Britt, at the junction of Highway 69 and Highway 522. The camp is 75 km. north of Parry Sound. Ontario, Canada.  It is park were motorboats are not allowed, and the campsites are amazing, the lakes are beautiful.
Maybe most of you do not know at this moment. Grundy Lake is in danger because of the forest fire that is going at this moment north of the park. There has been an evacuation order for Grundy Lake already. I can imagine this park not be there anymore.
Let’s hope the fire will be out soon and the park is saved. Also thinking about all the people that have to evacuate there homes and about the many fireman that work hard.

    This is who I am,

I am Karin Miedema. I was born in the Netherlands. I was a midwife assistant and then stayed in the family for ten days after the baby is born. I am a specialized  nurse for the mother and new born babies. I teach them how to look after the new born, Make sure mom heals fine and baby is ok. I also look after other children in the family and some housework. ‘Kraamverzorgster” this is called and for as far as I know only the Netherlands has this kind of care. I looked after children from when I was very young.

I  Emigrated to Canada in 1981 and married a Canadian. I have 2 sons and 2 daughters and 2 beautiful granddaughters. They love to be in my studio and be my model and use the props I have.

I have had a cat and dog, but they both passed. You can see I love animals.

I always had a strong interest in pictures and photography all my life.

I started with photography about 10 years ago. First nature (that I still do) and for the last 8 years I do photo shoots. I have a studio here at home, lots of props I can use if needed, but will also go on location.

I am a family photographer and love to work with children.

But I also do pets and events.

Have a look at my pictures.  If you have any questions, please email me at miedema.kg@rogers.com

For now enjoy the pictures and I hope to see you in the near future for a photo shoot.
